If you are an avid Microsoft Outlook user, which is a web-based suite that includes personal webmail, a calendar, tasks, and contacts, you may have had seemingly random issues pop up. Common ones include messages not being marked as "read" when opened, Outlook randomly crashing or not loading, and Outlook freezing completely.  These issues are due to PST corruption, which are Outlook's data files. You can fix it with scanpst.exe. Many people don't know where the scanpst location is. Read on to find out the answer.

1Where is the Location of ScanPST?

Permitting that you have Microsoft Office installed, you automatically have ScanPST installed on your computer. The easiest way to find it is by doing taking the following steps with Microsoft Office opened.

  • 1. Search "Outlook" at the search bar.

  • 2. Once found the icon, right click on it select Open File Location.

  • 3. A Windows Explorer window will open up with the folder that has Outlook installed in it. Double click this folder and find ScanPST in it.

If you would rather go directly through your program files, you can find ScanPST by navigating to one of the above listed locations.

Outlook 2016  64-bit
C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16
Outlook 2016  32-bit
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16
Outlook 2013  64-bit
C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15
Outlook 2013 32-bit
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15
Outlook 2010  64-bit
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office(x86)\Office14
Outlook 2010  32-bit
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
Outlook 2007  64-bit
C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12
Outlook 2007  32-bit

2How Does ScanPST Work?

First and foremost, all of your PST files have an internal structure (a table) to them that holds their data. This table is updated with information for each folder and sub-folder within the PST file. Within each row of the PST file, there will be information about folders, messages, and sub-folders. In most cases, sub-folders will refer to your inbox, contacts, calendars, and tasks.

When you initiate a run of the ScanPST program, the application checks the PST file's folder and compares it to the content of the PST table within it. It ensures that every folder, message, and sub-folder is formatted properly.

If there is an entry that has not been entered, ScanPST corrects it. If ScanPST finds that any blocks within the table is corrupt, it marks it as damaged and removes it completely.

3Why Does ScanPST.exe Program Fail?

Unfortunately, all programs do have drawbacks and can fail. When the ScanPST program fails, it's often because of the following reasons.

  • It is Unable to Find the ScanPST.exe Location. While this is rare, some users are unable to find the ScanPST.exe program as it is hidden underneath your Program Files in your C Drive.

  • Your Data Becomes Deleted Unnecessarily. If the ScanPST.exe program cannot find a specific table, folder, or message within the file, it may just remove it completely from the database. This can make your PST file unreadable and therefore, not able to be repaired by the tool.

  • There is a Size Limit of 2GB. If you have any PST files that are larger than 2GB, the ScanPST.exe program will fail because it has a size limitation of 2GB. Why?  It uses Unicode file format, which can only repair files that are under the 2GB size limitation.

  • Your PST File is Severely Damaged. If your PST file is severely damaged, the ScanPST.exe program will not repair your file completely. Why? It cannot repair file structure and internal elements of upper-objects within the file.

Now, while the scanpst.exe program is built right into your Windows computer, the drawbacks that it comes with can render it completely useless in some scenarios. With this said, you'd better use a better tool as an alternative to scanpst.exe.
