Also known as Windows Explorer, File Explorer is a built-in browsing function that has been launched with every single iteration of Microsoft Windows since the release of Microsoft’s Windows 95 operating software. Its main purpose is to help Windows users navigate through and manage the files, folders, and drives that are found on your computer system. A common issue with it is that it will randomly open by itself and every time you try to close it, it opens back up automatically.  There are a few causes for this, one of which is that there is something wrong with file explorer, that the system files are corrupted or missing, or that AutoPlay is turned on and the default program selected is File Explorer. Here are 3 ways you can fix File Explorer keeps opening issue without data loss.

3 Methods for Fixing File Explorer from Constantly Opening

The File Explorer keeps opening happens from time to time. It bothers users a lot, learn to fix it without losing data with the following methods.

1Use Task Manager to End File Explorer from Running

Sometimes the simple act of restarting a program application can fix the problem. If your File Explorer is constantly opening or automatically opening, you can try ending its process with the Task Manager and restarting it.

  • 1. Hold down CTRL + Alt + Delete to get a screen that allows you to access the task manager or hit CTRL + Shift + Esc to bring the task manager up directly.

  • 2. Find the open File Explorer in the list of active/open processes. Click on it and hit End Task.

  • 3. If you are using an older version of Windows, you may see a restart button instead of an end task button. Click it.

  • 4. Once you are done, do not close the task manager yet. Instead click on “file” and select a new task.

  • 5. Type into the new task box, explorer.exe and hit enter.

  • 6. Restart your system.

2Run an SFC Command to Find and Repair Corrupted System Files

You can use the system file checker or SFC to find out if there is any corruption within your Windows system. To run this command-line and use it, do the following.

  • 1. Click on your start button and type “cmd” into your search bar.  Right click on the Command Prompt application that pops up and run it in administrator mode.

  • 2. Type into the box that pops up, sfc/scannow and hit enter to have it do a full system scan of your computer.

  • 3. Wait until the process is 100% finished.

If there is no corruption, you will see that Windows did not find any integrity violations. However, if there is corruption, Windows will state that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

3Turn off the AutoPlay Option

If you have the AutoPlay option turned on, every time you connect an external hard drive, storage medium, or USB stick, your File Explorer is going to automatically pop open. AutoPlay is sometimes set to the File Explorer by default so that it shows the contents of your inserted drive. To fix this issue, do the following.

  • 1. Hold down the Windows key and hit R on your keyboard to get the Run command to open. Or, search Run in your computer search/start bar.

  • 2. Type in Control Panel into the Run Command and hit enter.  This will open your control panel for you.

  • 3. In the top right-hand corner of your Control Panel, you will see a “View By: Category” drop down box. Click it and hit the small icons.

  • 4. Find AutoPlay in the list and click it.

  • 5. Now you can uncheck or turn off the option that AutoPlay’s all inserted media or devices.

  • 6. Hit the save button and now every time you insert an external hard drive or USB stick, you won’t get File Explorer automatically opening.
